Earth Day Clean-Up

Every year, we celebrate Earth Day to demonstrate our support for environmental protection and to remind ourselves why it is so important to take care of our planet. With the onset of the coronavirus, we witnessed typically eco-conscious individuals switch from reusable to single-use items such as drinking straws, wet wipes, and of course, disposable masks - all in effort to prevent unnecessary transmission of the virus. This new consumer behavior has had a positive effect on public health, but on the flip side, the improper disposal of single-use items has had a harmful impact on the environment. At the height of the pandemic, disposable cleaning products such as gloves and disinfecting wipes were littered at a higher rate than ever before. In our work in Brunswick and the surrounding areas, we have sent out teams of street sweepers and parking lot cleaners who have reported seeing more PPE on the ground than ever before. Fortunately, in the months since the spike of COVID-19 in the U.S., the rate of gloves and disinfecting wipes found in litter has gone down considerably. However, personal protective equipment (PPE) such as disposable masks have been littered more than 80-fold as a result of COVID-19 legislation.

Even though fewer businesses are requiring customers to wear masks we still see a significant number of disposable masks and other types of PPE littering parking lots. Litter can potentially clog drains and sewage systems, pollute bodies of water, leach contaminants such as microplastics into the lower food chain, and even poison wildlife. Adding masks, gloves, and wipes to the mix only worsens those potential outcomes.

The good news is that businesses big and small can do their part in eliminating excessive waste by hiring parking lot cleaning services to remove litter and other environmental contaminants from their properties on a regular basis. At AAA Total Property Solutions, we offer parking lot sweeping, pressure washing, and a variety of services to keep your property litter-free. This Earth Day, don’t be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution.
